Your Personal Safety Strategy from the Director of Public Safety and Security!

Questions about safety within our college community arise as active shooter events take place across our country. Unfortunately, these tragic events are part of the reality of our society and it is important that we prepare students and ourselves.

  1. The Public Safety Department is available to instruct your department, facilitate team/staff meeting and review personal safety strategies to counter an active shooter. Please contact the Public Safety Director Cliff Anderson 763-433-1184 for scheduling.
  1. Watch Videos to Prepare: Personal Protection & Safety video titled “Shots Fired on Campus” . FBI Documentary regarding active shooter events on campus “The Coming Storm”.
  1. Sign Up for STAR ALERT College Emergency Messages

Ask yourself “What would you do?” in the event of a sudden attack by an armed intruder at work, school or in public.

When these events occur, they are often over within a few minutes and may require each individual to take immediate action to protect themselves. If you ever find yourself in the middle of an active shooter event, your survival may depend on whether or not you have a strategy.

  1. RUN: First and foremost, if you can get out, do.
  • Flee whether others agree or not
  • Leave your belongings behind
  • When you are safe, call 911
  1. HIDE/BARRICADE: If you can’t get out safely, you need to find a place to hide. Act quickly and quietly. Try to secure your hiding place the best you can.
  • Lock and barricade the door.
  • Turn off lights
  • Silence your phone
  • Hide behind large objects
  • Look for alternative escape routes (i.e. windows)
  • Spread out in the room
  1. FIGHT/CONFRONT: As a last resort, and only if your life is danger – whether you’re alone or working as a group, fight.
  • Attempt to incapacitate the shooter using any objects available – improvise weapons
  • Commit to your action – this is a matter of life or death

      When Law Enforcement arrives:

  • Remain calm and follow instructions
  • Keep your hands visible at all times because the police are looking for multiple shooters
